Honoring the Voters’ Will in Senate Appointments

The death of Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey presents Governor Chris Christie some choices in appointing a temporary replacement. The Republican governor could exploit Lautenberg’s death by appointing a Republican, or he could honor the voters’ choice and maintain political continuity by appointing a Democrat. Likewise, if a Republican Senator dies while in office, then a Republican should be appointed because the voters had elected a Republican.
